Long-time friends and collaborators Jun Takahashi (Undercover), Misha Hollenbach & Shauna T (P.A.M.) reconvene in 2020 to shine a light on darkness. Produced by Medicom Toy, the new Undercover X P.A.M. ‘Skull & Hand Lamp’ and accompanying capsule were conceived via the groups shared interest in fantasy and romanticism, while also being reminiscent of a previous collaboration.
A skull with glowing eyes is cupped in an elegant androgynous hand.
Standing approximately 16cm tall, the lamp has 2 parts: The skull, coloured light eyes and dimmer switch, docks securely with a wall-mountable hand. The design allows the lamp to function in a portable and ornamental fashion, or as a fixture. Packaging is reminiscent of an antique store find.
The accompanying capsule includes a collection of hooded sweats and short sleeved t-shirts with logo and graphic prints, rendered by Jun Takahashi and Misha Hollenbach themselves, remixing elements of the lamp’s design while juxtaposing its placid energy.
The previous Undercover X P.A.M. collaboration explored similar subject matter. The ‘Black Mass Lamp’ (2011) saw a lightbulb-eyed skull resting atop a stack of thick books, their titles referencing the Dark Arts.
Both the old and new lamps could be interpreted as a ‘still life’ of death. But while most commonly associated with mortality and evil, the skull is also home to the brightest earthly light — that of the mind — and is the face we all share beneath these fleshy masks. The skull is illuminated, no longer inanimate, and brimming with light, intellect and magic. From some angles the skull exudes pure sorrow, from others an unblinking grin.
